Pierce College Fort Steilacoom, just minutes from Historic Steilacoom. Pierce College District 11 is two community colleges and an extended learning program in Pierce County, Washington state. Steilacoom Historical Museum (Opening soon), 1816 Rainier Street, next to the Nathaniel Orr Home on Rainier Street (near Steilacoom Center). A collection of historical photographs is on display. There are photos of the town’s first business district including the port, livery stables, and early transportation such as the Interurban Trolley that operated between Tacoma and Olympia. Nathaniel Orr Home & Pioneer Orchard on Rainier Street (near Steilacoom Center) Built in 1854-1857 contains original furnishings and artifacts.

Look for the old-time street lamps located in the downtown area where colorful Garden Basketshang from the lampposts May through September. The baskets are assembled by women from the Steilacoom Garden Club and maintained by the Town’s public works crew. American and Kiwanis club flags are added to the posts before the Fourth of July.

For a change of pace you may want to Take a trip on the Sound and enjoy the Relaxing 20-minute cruise to beautiful Anderson and Ketron Islands. The MV Christine Anderson (a 52-car ferry) regularly transports pedestrians and motorists. The Pierce County Ferry Terminal at the foot of Union Avenue in Steilacoom has regularly scheduled trips throughout the day.

Be sure to stop at the Anderson Island General Store to get directions to the Riviera Lakeshore Restaurant. Located on the edge of Lake Josephine, the water-facing eatery offers a great view of Mt. Rainier. 884-3344, 11019 Country Club Drive.

Historic Fort Steilacoom, 9601 Steilacoom Boulevard (on the grounds of Western State Hospital). Four restored 1850’s structures from the days of this ‘Fort Without Walls’: 1849-1868. The Fort showcases life in the late 19 th century prior to the Civil War. Open from 1-4 p.m. on Sundays.

Fort Lewis Military Museum, Building 4320, Fort Lewis, Exit 120 on I-5, just South of Tacoma. Documents the presence of the United States Army in the Pacific Northwest from the 1803 Lewis & Clark Expedition to present. Four major galleries including large collections of World War I uniforms, weapons and equipment from Camp Lewis' beginnings in 1917. McChord Air Force Base Air Museum, Exit 125 on I-5, just South of Tacoma. Documents the history of McChord Air Force Base. Vintage aircraft and memorabilia from the 1930s through the 1980s include restoration projects, a Douglas B-18A Bolo bomber, a Skytrain "Gooney Bird" transport, a Douglas F-15A Eagle, and a Douglas C-124C Globemaster II transport and a flight simulator.
